Pennsylvania practicums for Loyola New Orleans nursing students
Pennsylvania is open to every Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing program on the July 15, 2026 map. The June 2, 2026 advanced practice table agrees that the state meets requirements, then attaches one of only six notes on the entire table, a child abuse training item tied to initial certification in Pennsylvania.

Section 21.118: training on another state's license
Pennsylvania writes an exception for students into 49 Pa. Code § 21.118. Hold a current RN license anywhere in the U.S. or Canada, be enrolled in a graduate nursing or BSN program that holds accreditation, and you may do the clinical nursing your program requires without a Pennsylvania license. Pay ends the exception: stipends, scholarships and program-related awards are fine, wages are not. Want paid RN shifts in Pennsylvania while you study? The rule then routes you to two applications: endorsement licensure, and a temporary practice permit.
Loyola asks more than the rule does. Its handbook asks for an RN license that is active in the practicum's state. Pennsylvania has been a full compact member since July 7, 2025, so if you live in a compact state and your license there is multistate, Loyola's rule is met at a Pennsylvania site. Licensed only in a non-compact state? Take that to the Clinical Practicum Coordinator. Pennsylvania has not enacted the APRN Compact.
A rules package now in review could touch this. Pennsylvania's nursing board sent its education-program regulations, tracked as IRRC #16A-5141, forward in final form on September 8, 2026, and the IRRC meets publicly on the package October 15, 2026. Section 21.118 comes through that final text with its substance intact.
Collaborative agreements and your preceptor
Pennsylvania sits in AANP's reduced practice category. NPs there work under a written agreement with physicians for an entire career, and prescribing requires collaborative agreements with no fewer than two of them.
Loyola's preceptor standards stack on top: an active, unencumbered Pennsylvania license, board certification, more than a year (2,080 hours) of practice and no family relationship with you. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Allentown, Harrisburg
Pennsylvania's piece of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington metro holds some 4.24 million residents in the 2025 Census estimates; the Pittsburgh metro, entirely in-state, about 2.42 million. Next come the Pennsylvania share of Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton (roughly 775,000) and Harrisburg-Carlisle (roughly 617,000). UPMC, Jefferson Health, Geisinger, Penn State Health and Penn Medicine (University of Pennsylvania Health System) are big names worth researching on their own terms.
The Philadelphia metro spills into New Jersey and Delaware, both approved on Loyola's map and both in the compact, so a site over the state line is an option with the right licenses. New York is the exception nearby: Loyola's map says clinicals cannot be completed there. Screen every name in Explore Clinical Locations first.

Loyola's June 2, 2026 advanced practice table ties initial certification in Pennsylvania to a minimum of 3 hours of approved training in recognizing and reporting child abuse. It says nothing more. Your School of Nursing contacts can tell you where that training fits your plan; also read the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing's own instructions before you apply for certification.
Can I work paid RN shifts in Pennsylvania during my Loyola program?
Section 21.118 covers unpaid clinical practice only; a student who also wants Pennsylvania RN work is told to apply for a license by endorsement and a temporary practice permit. The Board separately says holders of an active, unencumbered multistate license may practice in Pennsylvania on it. If the practicum is at your job, Loyola's attestation rules apply; see working where you work.
Can a Philadelphia student do Loyola clinicals in New Jersey?
Loyola's map approves New Jersey for all programs, so a site there is possible. It follows New Jersey's rules, and your preceptor needs a New Jersey license. New Jersey belongs to the compact, so a Pennsylvania multistate license reaches it. New York differs: Loyola's map rules out clinicals in that state.
Is a Pennsylvania RN license required for a Loyola practicum in Pittsburgh?
Not necessarily. If you live in a compact state and hold its multistate license, that license works in Pennsylvania and meets Loyola's active-license rule for the practicum state. Section 21.118 also lets students licensed elsewhere do required, unpaid clinical work. Nurses whose sole license comes from a non-compact state should raise it with the coordinator before counting on § 21.118.
