The Loyola University New Orleans State Approvals Map, color by color
The Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing marks every state on a single map: green for approved, purple for approved with a restriction, red for not approved. On the July 15, 2026 version, three states are purple (Alaska, California, New York) and three are red (Hawaii, Montana, Wyoming). Here is what each color and note asks of you.

Where the map lives and which file to trust
The map is a one-page PDF published by the School of Nursing. The Graduate Nursing Student Resources page links it under the label Nursing State Authorization Disclosure, in a file dated 7.15.26. Loyola's state authorization policies page and the online accreditation page still link an earlier file dated 8.20.25. Neither map prints a date on its face; the date lives in the file name.
The two files match everywhere except Rhode Island, red in the 2025 file and green in the 2026 file. If a classmate forwards a screenshot, ask which file it was taken from first. The map covers the 50 states and the District of Columbia; Puerto Rico, Guam and the other territories do not appear on it.
Reading the four colors
The legend talks about programs, yet the map never lists which School of Nursing programs it covers. The purple notes carry the only detail there is: one names a program (California), one names a filing with a state board (Alaska), and one names where clinicals may happen (New York).

Nothing on the map says whether a color refers to the state you live in, the state that holds your practicum site, or both. Loyola's professional licensure table also answers several of these states differently; the licensure disclosures page sets the two sources next to each other.
Alaska: a board filing before your preceptorship
The map approves Alaska with a restriction: students must register with the state board, a registration valid for 12 months, and need a preceptorship application from the board. Alaska's board confirms the step on its own pages. Its FAQ points APRN students to a board preceptorship filing, and its rules handle each out-of-state APRN student through an individual registration instead of a school approval.
To register, you show the board an RN license in good standing (Alaska's or another state's), current proof of APRN program enrollment, and a copy of the preceptorship arrangement agreed among school, facility, student and preceptor. The registration lapses at 12 months, or sooner if the preceptorship finishes first. Put the board filing on your timeline next to Loyola's own lead time. Loyola's licensure table carries no Alaska note, one of the gaps the disclosures page lists; the Alaska guide has the board details.
California and New York: limited, not closed
California is approved for the FNP only on both files. Loyola adds on its state authorization page that California does not take part in SARA and does not require Loyola to register online programs with no physical presence there. For an FNP student living in California the map is open; for an AGACNP, PMHNP or other student it is not. The licensure table puts its FNP-only note on Arizona instead, so confirm your program with the School of Nursing before building a California search.
New York is purple with a different kind of limit: clinicals cannot be completed in New York. Loyola's advanced practice table goes further: New York applicants are admitted only if they can complete practicums in some other state. New York's State Education Department sets the rule on its side: any nursing program based in another state, or delivered online, needs NYSED registration or approval before it places students in New York clinical rotations, with federal Armed Forces and VA facilities excepted.

Hawaii, Montana and Wyoming: red on both files
Three states are not approved on either map: Hawaii, Montana and Wyoming. The legend gives no reason and no pending status, since none of the three is blue. Loyola's June 2, 2026 licensure table lists all three as meeting requirements with no note, the sharpest disagreement between Loyola's sources.
If you live in one of these states, or plan to move to one, take the question to the program director for your track and the Clinical Practicum Coordinator ahead of any application or relocation. Loyola asks enrolled students to speak with their program advisor before any move, and the moving guide lists what to bring to that conversation.
A red state on the map and a Yes in the licensure table do not cancel out. Get the School of Nursing's written answer before you sign a lease, take a job or commit to a preceptor in Hawaii, Montana or Wyoming.
Green is the start of the work, not the end
Green means the School of Nursing shows the state as approved for all programs. It does not mean a site there is ready. Every practicum still needs a Loyola affiliation agreement with the site, a Wishlist in Exxat Prism carrying the preceptor's documents, and Placement Approved status before the first hour. Each practicum state also requires your RN license to be active there, and some states add compliance items of their own.
Two green places carry practicum limits in the licensure table: Arizona, where the table approves practicum for the FNP only for now, and the District of Columbia, where the table sends clinical rotations outside DC. How we use the map in every search
Your map color sets the plan before we contact anyone. In a green state, the search starts right away with nearby preceptors whose patient mix suits your course, and we check the host state's rules for schools based elsewhere as we go. In a purple state, the restriction shapes the search: an FNP-only check in California, the board registration timeline in Alaska, and sites across the state line for New York residents. In a red state, we wait for the School of Nursing's answer and build options that match it.

Where do I find Loyola's State Approvals Map?
The School of Nursing links the current file, dated July 15, 2026 in its name, from the Graduate Nursing Student Resources page, labeled Nursing State Authorization Disclosure. Loyola's state authorization policies page and online accreditation page still link the August 20, 2025 file. The two differ only on Rhode Island, which moved from red to green.
Can I do a Loyola practicum in California if I'm not in the FNP program?
On the State Approvals Map, California is approved with a restriction: FNP only. Loyola's licensure table sets no California limit and instead restricts Arizona practicums to the FNP, so the two sources disagree. An AGACNP, PMHNP or Nurse-Midwifery student hoping to train in California needs a written answer from the program director and the Clinical Practicum Coordinator first.
What does purple mean on the Loyola map?
Purple means approved with restrictions. Three states are purple on the July 15, 2026 file: Alaska, where students register with the state board for 12 months and file a board preceptorship application; California, limited to the FNP; and New York, where clinicals cannot be completed. Each restriction changes how you plan the search, not only whether you can enroll.
Is any state pending approval on the map?
No. The legend includes blue for pending approval, but no state is blue on either the July 15, 2026 or the August 20, 2025 file. Every state is green, purple or red. If you hear that approval for Hawaii, Montana or Wyoming is on the way, ask the School of Nursing directly, since the published map shows nothing pending.
I study online. Why does New York's restriction matter to me?
Online coursework and in-person clinicals follow different rules. The map approves New York with the restriction that clinicals cannot be completed there, and the advanced practice table admits New York applicants only when their practicums can happen outside New York. Plan each practicum in a neighboring state where your RN license is active and the map shows green.
