Ohio's student exemption and who can supervise you
Ohio's nursing statute requires no Board approval, and not even a notice, from an out-of-state school before its students train in Ohio. Section 4723.32 works the other way, by listing people the licensing law leaves alone. Its division (F) reaches students in APRN programs, provided the program leads either to eligibility for an approved national certification exam or to a qualifying master's or doctoral degree, and provided they train under that program's auspices.
One condition shapes your search more than the rest. The person supervising you has to be an APRN, and that APRN has to be working for the program in one of three roles: preceptor, faculty member or teaching assistant.
Loyola's FNP guide lets an NP, MD, DO or PA precept NURS G823 and NURS G827, the first two FPCM practicums. In Ohio, a physician or PA in that seat raises a question about the state's APRN condition, so put it to the Clinical Practicum Coordinator before a non-APRN name goes on your Wishlist. An Ohio nurse practitioner who also meets Loyola's preceptor requirements sidesteps the issue.
Reduced practice: the standard care arrangement
On AANP's scale, Ohio counts as reduced practice. Every Ohio NP works under a standard care arrangement, and the arrangement never lapses: it pairs the NP with a collaborating physician or podiatrist for the length of a career. Schedule II prescribing carries extra limits that depend on the setting, something you will watch your preceptor work within.
Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Dayton
Census Bureau figures for 2025 put the Columbus metro at about 2.24 million residents and Cleveland's at about 2.17 million. Roughly 1.76 million people live in the Ohio share of the Cincinnati metro, and Dayton-Kettering-Beavercreek adds about 827,000. Ohio's large systems include OhioHealth (Columbus), Cleveland Clinic, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, University Hospitals (Cleveland) and Bon Secours Mercy Health, known in Cincinnati as Mercy Health. Treat them as research leads only.

The Cincinnati metro also reaches into Kentucky, which Loyola's map approves as well; a clinic across the river follows Kentucky's rules and needs a Kentucky-licensed preceptor.
Your RN license for an Ohio practicum
Ohio's Nurse Licensure Compact membership has been active since January 1, 2023. In the Ohio Board of Nursing's explanation, a nurse keeps one multistate license, issued by the state where the nurse primarily lives, and practices on it throughout the compact. An Ohio multistate license therefore covers an Ohio site and also answers Loyola's rule that enrolled graduate students hold a Louisiana or multistate license.
Confirm in Nursys that yours is marked multistate. Ohio has not enacted the APRN Compact, which cannot operate until seven states adopt it, so NP licensure after graduation is a separate Ohio application. Timing and encumbrances are covered on the RN license page.

You would select your own Ohio preceptor and site, hold an RN license that is active in Ohio, and keep a Louisiana or multistate license while enrolled. Must Loyola get Ohio Board of Nursing approval before my clinicals?
Ohio's statute is silent on any filing by a school based elsewhere. It handles APRN students through the exemption in ORC 4723.32, which turns on APRN supervision. Loyola's steps still apply: the site's affiliation agreement, your Wishlist, and Placement Approved before any hour counts.
My best preceptor lead is in Northern Kentucky. Does that work?
Loyola's map approves Kentucky for all programs, so a site across the Ohio River is possible. Kentucky's board and rules then govern the placement, and your preceptor needs a Kentucky license. Kentucky belongs to the Nurse Licensure Compact too, so a multistate license from Ohio covers you on either bank.
When should an Ohio student start the preceptor search?
Loyola tells graduate students to begin at least three months before the practicum term, because processing can take that long, and a site that edits the standard agreement can add months more. Keep a second Ohio site in reserve. The three-month lead time page works backward from your start date.
