New Jersey practicums: stay on the right side of the Hudson
New Jersey is open to every Loyola University New Orleans nursing program: the School of Nursing's July 2026 map shows it approved, and both June 2026 licensure tables say the programs meet. For many students here the catch lies across the river, because Loyola's map bars clinicals in New York. That limit, joint protocols and the compact shape a New Jersey search.

The New York line in a two-state metro
Of New Jersey's people, roughly 7.1 million lived in 2025 within the New York-Newark-Jersey City metro, by Census count. Loyola approves New York only with a restriction: clinicals cannot be completed there. A daily PATH ride into the city may be routine for work, yet a practicum site across the river will not count, so every clinic on a North Jersey list has to sit in New Jersey. South Jersey has a different pull. Close to 1.4 million South Jersey residents are counted in the metro anchored by Philadelphia, and Loyola's map shows Pennsylvania green. A Philadelphia site can work when your RN license is active in Pennsylvania, which has honored multistate licenses since July 2025.
Joint protocols and who can precept you
AANP groups New Jersey with the reduced practice states. To order medications and devices, a nurse practitioner there must keep joint protocols with a collaborating physician. At an NP-led clinic, then, prescribing happens inside a written physician protocol, and asking a prospective preceptor how theirs works is a fair first-meeting question.
Loyola's rules settle who qualifies. The FNP guide lets NPs, MDs, DOs or PAs supervise NURS G823 and NURS G827, so a collaborating physician can precept in their own right, while NURS G829 needs the pediatric and obstetric patients that course is built around. Measure every candidate against Loyola's preceptor requirements.
The Board, the compact and your license
The New Jersey Board of Nursing works within the Division of Consumer Affairs. Chapter 13:37 of the state's administrative code governs programs New Jersey accredits, and its one placement provision concerns New Jersey schools sending students out of state. Nothing in it asks an outside school for approval, or even a heads-up, before its students start clinical work in the state. If a site asks whether New Jersey has signed off on Loyola, route that to the Clinical Practicum Coordinator.
Compact membership arrived on November 15, 2021. From that date a multistate license has covered New Jersey clinics, and the same card meets Loyola's requirement of a Louisiana or multistate license during enrollment. New Jersey has not adopted the APRN Compact; NP licensure after graduation runs through the Board on New Jersey's terms.
Health systems from Hackensack to Camden
Five large systems cover much of the state: Cooper University Health Care, based in Camden, plus Virtua Health, RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health and the Atlantic Health System. Their outpatient practices make a natural first list, though each still needs a Loyola affiliation agreement before an hour counts.
Away from the two giant metros, the Trenton-Princeton area holds around 400,000 people and Atlantic City-Hammonton about 372,000. Loyola's Explore Clinical Locations map in Exxat Prism shows which New Jersey organizations already hold an agreement.

Questions Loyola students ask
Jersey City is home. Could my Loyola site be across the river in Manhattan?
No. The School of Nursing's map restricts New York so that clinicals cannot be completed there, whatever your home address. A Jersey City or Newark student builds a practicum list from New Jersey clinics, or from Pennsylvania ones if the license allows. Faculty will look for a site in an approved state before anything else.
Must New Jersey's nursing board clear Loyola before my clinicals begin?
Chapter 13:37 speaks to programs New Jersey accredits and contains no requirement that an outside school obtain approval or send notice first. Individual hospitals and practices still run their own onboarding. For anything the Board may have posted since, the Clinical Practicum Coordinator is the right contact.
Can a collaborating physician be my preceptor in New Jersey?
For the first two FNP practicums, yes. Loyola's FNP guide accepts NP, MD, DO and PA preceptors in FPCM I and II, provided they meet its certification, experience and licensing rules and hold a license current in New Jersey. Later courses narrow the field, and hospital or specialty settings need director approval.
Is New Jersey a compact state for my RN license?
Yes. Since November 2021 New Jersey has been part of the nurse compact, so any multistate RN license in good standing reaches a New Jersey clinic. The same multistate license satisfies Loyola's enrollment rule, which asks graduate students to keep a Louisiana or multistate license the whole time they are enrolled.
