Loyola University New Orleans students from New York
Loyola University New Orleans students cannot complete clinicals in New York, and Loyola accepts New York applicants only if they can do their practicums in another state. The advanced practice licensure table (June 2, 2026) and the School of Nursing's approvals map (July 15, 2026) both carry that limit, while the pre-licensure BSN table shows New York without it. Settle where your practicums will happen, and have the School of Nursing sign off on that plan, before enrolling.

New York across Loyola's documents
For graduate students the sources line up: no New York clinicals. The outlier is the BSN table, which omits the limit. Loyola runs BSN and accelerated BSN clinicals in the New Orleans area, but a New York applicant to either program should still ask the School of Nursing how the two readings apply. The licensure disclosures page lists every split of this kind.

New York's own rule for out-of-state programs
Clinical rotations in New York by students of outside schools are controlled by the State Education Department (NYSED). Its rule: any nursing program run from another state or delivered online must hold NYSED registration or approval before placing students in New York clinicals. For NP students, NYSED looks at whether the NP program itself is registered, and it warns NP students that rotations tied to an unregistered program might be unlawful.
NYSED's Office of College and University Evaluation goes further: a clinical placement in a licensed profession gives an out-of-state school a physical presence in New York, and the Office of the Professions has to approve or exempt it beforehand, SARA member or not. Whatever lies behind Loyola's limit, the practical result for you is the same: plan every practicum hour outside New York.
Living in New York, training across the border
Every Loyola practicum for a New York resident happens in a neighboring state. All five of New York's neighbors, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont, are green on Loyola's map, approved for every program.
- Choose a host state you can reachEvery hour is completed on site with your preceptor present, so commuting time counts. Loyola's FNP practicum letter warns that sites outside your own city are possible in any semester.
- License yourself where the site isLoyola asks for an RN license active in each practicum state. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Vermont participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact; Massachusetts has passed compact legislation with a May 2027 start as its target. Ask the host board which license fits your situation.
- Start the site paperwork earlyThe host site needs a Loyola affiliation agreement and your Exxat Wishlist must be complete, a process Loyola says can take three months. The New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut guides cover each host state's rules.
Licensing and practice inside New York
New York has never joined the Nurse Licensure Compact. NYSED sends RNs from other states to a checklist for getting a New York license, which tells you a compact license from elsewhere will not let you practice here; New York has not adopted the APRN Compact either. Loyola's enrollment rule, a Louisiana or multistate license held while you study, applies to you as well; the RN license guide explains it.
On AANP's map New York is full practice, but a new NP with under 3,600 practice hours must have a written agreement with a collaborating physician, plus practice protocols. That will matter once you start practicing in New York after graduation. The big downstate systems (NewYork-Presbyterian, Mount Sinai, NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health) and upstate's University of Rochester Medical Center sit outside Loyola's practicum map for now; note that the New York City metro area itself reaches into New Jersey.

Does Loyola New Orleans accept nursing students who live in New York?
Only on a condition. Loyola's advanced practice licensure table says it turns away New York applicants who cannot do their practicums in another state, and that clinical rotations currently belong outside New York. Decide which state will host your practicums, and have the School of Nursing confirm that plan, before you apply.
Would a New York VA or Armed Forces site count toward Loyola hours?
NYSED leaves federal Armed Forces and VA facilities out of its registration requirement. Loyola's licensure table and approvals map, though, say clinicals cannot be completed in New York and carve out nothing. Raise it with the School of Nursing, and get the reply on paper, before you approach any New York site, federal or not.
Is a New York RN license enough for Loyola's graduate programs?
Not on its own. Loyola requires a Louisiana or multistate license during enrollment and an RN license active in every practicum state. With New York outside the compact, a New York license is good only in New York, the one state where Loyola practicums cannot happen. I'm moving to New York mid-program. What changes?
Tell your program advisor before the move. Loyola notes that a change of state can touch licensure, practicum options and aid, and after a move to New York every remaining practicum still has to be sited in another state. Work out how far you can travel to a site, and which license that state requires, before you settle on an address.
