Loyola New Orleans practicums in Tennessee
On paper, Tennessee is settled for Loyola University New Orleans: the licensure table dated June 2, 2026 says its MSN and DNP programs meet requirements, and the July 15, 2026 State Approvals Map approves every program. The moving part is in Nashville's statehouse. A 2026 bill aimed at nursing schools headquartered elsewhere could reshape placements here, so start with that.

SB 2013 and the two-year pause on outside schools
Senate Bill 2013 (House Bill 1905) calls itself the Tennessee Nursing Education Integrity and Oversight Act, and its core is a two-year freeze. For those two years, the Board of Nursing would stop taking in, and stop approving, applications from any nursing program not based in Tennessee. The freeze covers programs that want to operate, recruit students in the state or put learners in Tennessee clinical settings, and the text treats pre-licensure and APRN education alike.
Schools cleared before the law's effective date hold on to that approval, with a new duty to report. Data requests can come from the Board or from a new player, the Tennessee Center for Nursing Advancement, and may cover preceptor rosters and placement figures. June 30, 2027 is the deadline for that Center to recommend new approval standards aimed at out-of-state schools that rely on Tennessee preceptors or clinical sites.
The act carries no delayed start: it takes effect as soon as it becomes law. For its status, check with the Tennessee Board of Nursing; for what it means to you, ask Loyola's School of Nursing. Loyola tells enrolled students within 14 calendar days when a state determination changes, so keep an eye on your Loyola email.

Physician supervision shapes the NP you learn from
AANP lists Tennessee as restricted. An NP there practices with physician supervision; Schedule II to IV prescriptions are limited, and so are opioid quantities. Those limits shape what you see in the exam room.
Loyola's requirements ride on top: a Tennessee license that is active and unencumbered, board certification, and practice experience past one year, as the preceptor requirements page sets out. For a DNP Scholarly Project practicum, your employer and your direct supervisor are both off the list.
An incentive program that leaves Louisiana schools out
Tennessee also funds a preceptor incentive with state grant money, administered through the Tennessee Hospital Association as the THA Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program. LPN, RN and APRN preceptors qualify each cycle after at least 70 hours teaching a single student one-on-one, while money lasts, and must first finish a UTHSC preceptor course (NP preceptors get their own module).
The students who count are enrolled in accredited Tennessee programs; students from schools in seven nearby states (Georgia, Missouri, Alabama, Kentucky, Virginia, Arkansas and Mississippi) count too when their hours are logged inside Tennessee. Louisiana schools are not on the list, so hours with a Loyola student earn a preceptor nothing from it. The current round covers August 1 through December 1, 2026.
Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, Chattanooga
Census Bureau estimates for 2025 give greater Nashville about 2.2 million people. Knoxville's metro counts roughly 968,000, while the Tennessee shares of the Memphis and Chattanooga metros come to about 1.02 million and 438,000. The large systems here include Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, Erlanger, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Covenant Health and Ballad Health.
Run each name through Explore Clinical Locations first, since a site already under a Loyola agreement moves through quickly. In the Memphis area you can also look across the river: Mississippi and Arkansas are both approved on Loyola's map, provided your RN license and your preceptor's match the site's state.
License and compact status
Tennessee put the Nurse Licensure Compact into effect in January 2018. If Tennessee is your home state and your RN license is multistate, it carries into Louisiana, which covers Loyola's enrolled-student license rule. The APRN Compact has no Tennessee law behind it, which keeps post-graduation NP licensing a Tennessee-only application. Can I still do a Loyola practicum in Tennessee in 2026?
Loyola's current sources say yes: the July 15, 2026 map approves Tennessee for all School of Nursing programs, and the licensure table lists it as meeting requirements. The moratorium bill on outside nursing programs could affect new placements once it takes effect, so check with the Clinical Practicum Coordinator before committing to a site.
Will my Tennessee preceptor be paid through the state incentive program?
No. The THA program's student list stops at Tennessee schools plus those of seven other states, none of them Louisiana. Loyola's standard affiliation agreement also says neither the school nor the site owes the other payment, so talk about time and teaching load with a preceptor, not compensation.
Can I do my practicum at the Tennessee clinic where I work?
Possibly. Loyola permits a practicum at your workplace through the Employed at Clinical Site Attestation, as long as you train in a different department and during hours separate from your work shifts. DNP project preceptors cannot be your employer or direct supervisor. Read working where you work before raising it with your manager.
Which RN license covers a Tennessee practicum?
Any RN license active in Tennessee. A Tennessee multistate license already reaches both Tennessee and Louisiana. Commuting from another Compact state? Your home state's multistate license works too. A license limited to one non-Compact state leaves a Tennessee site uncovered.
