Kentucky practicums for Loyola New Orleans NP and DNP students
Kentucky is open to every Loyola University New Orleans nursing program, and Kentucky's nursing board leaves schools based in other states to their home regulators. A board that regulates Kentucky-born programs
KBN's position is simple: a nursing school headquartered outside Kentucky does not answer to it, even when that school has no Kentucky campus and still sends students to Kentucky clinical sites. Its approval work covers prelicensure programs originating in Kentucky, and its interest in graduate education extends only to programs leading to licensure.
State law also carves out nurses licensed elsewhere. KBN also cites KRS 314.101, whose exemption lets an out-of-state nurse complete a Kentucky rotation when the school belongs to SARA or holds a license from Kentucky's Council on Postsecondary Education. Loyola participates in NC-SARA. Loyola's own rule is tighter than that exemption, since it asks for an RN license that is active in whatever state hosts your practicum.
Your preceptor holds Kentucky licenses
For online MSN and DNP programs, KBN says anyone serving as a preceptor in Kentucky, and any faculty member overseeing students in Kentucky clinical settings, must carry active, unencumbered Kentucky RN and APRN licenses. KBN relaxes that for faculty residing in another compact state, who need the Kentucky APRN license alone.
Loyola layers its own preceptor requirements on that base: board certification, more than a year in practice and no family ties. Because metro Louisville spills into Indiana, confirm which side of the state line a clinician actually practices on; the site's state decides which license counts.
What reduced practice means for your search
AANP places Kentucky in its reduced practice group. To prescribe both controlled and non-controlled drugs, a qualifying Kentucky NP keeps two separate physician agreements in place unless exempted by the Board. For their first licensed year, new NPs also face limits on the settings where they may be employed.
Two consequences follow. The NP you train with may practice alongside a collaborating physician, which can widen your options in FPCM courses that accept physician preceptors. And Loyola's experience bar of more than one year already screens out NPs still in that first licensed year, so ask about start dates before you ask about schedules.

Louisville, Lexington and Northern Kentucky
By 2025 Census estimates, roughly 1.12 million Kentuckians live in the Louisville metro, about 535,000 in Lexington-Fayette and close to 475,000 in the Kentucky counties of greater Cincinnati, with Bowling Green a smaller center. Large systems that employ Kentucky NPs include St. Elizabeth Healthcare, Norton Healthcare, UofL Health, the University of Kentucky's UK HealthCare, and Baptist Health, which spans Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Every one of them sets its own rules for student requests.

Questions Loyola students ask
Does Kentucky have to approve Loyola New Orleans before I do clinicals there?
No. KBN's regulatory overview for out-of-state programs says it neither approves nor requires approval of nursing programs based elsewhere, including those running a clinical component in Kentucky. Loyola's State Approvals Map, for its part, lists Kentucky as approved for every School of Nursing program.
Is my Kentucky RN license enough for Loyola?
If it is multistate, it usually covers both of Loyola's license rules: it is active at a Kentucky site and meets the Louisiana-or-multistate requirement for enrolled graduate students. A single-state Kentucky license would cover the site only. The separate APRN Compact is not yet in operation anywhere.
Can I do my Loyola practicum in Cincinnati or Southern Indiana?
Both metros cross state lines. A clinic in Ohio or Indiana answers to that state's rules, not Kentucky's, and Loyola asks for an active RN license wherever the site sits. Read the Ohio guide or the Indiana guide before committing to a site across the state line.
Can a newly licensed Kentucky NP precept me?
Not for a Loyola NP practicum until they pass one year. Loyola's FNP guide asks preceptors for more than one year, or 2,080 hours, of practice, and Kentucky's first-year rules already limit the settings where new NPs may work. Aim for clinicians with a few years in their role.
