A North Carolina practicum plan for Loyola nursing students
Loyola University New Orleans shows North Carolina green on its State Approvals Map, and its June 2026 licensure tables agree. What shapes a practicum here is the state: a restricted practice environment in which every NP works under a physician agreement, a board that leaves graduate programs to their schools, and one licensing contact for students whose RN license is neither North Carolina nor multistate.

A board that leaves graduate programs to the schools
North Carolina's nursing board takes no position, yes or no, on post-licensure graduate programs from any state. RN-BSN tracks, master's programs and doctoral programs all sit outside what it governs. Where it does act on outside schools, under 21 NCAC 36 .0233, the students concerned are pre-licensure and unlicensed, and the request comes from the host agency's chief nursing administrator 30 or more days before clinicals.
One instruction does speak to students like you. Master's and doctoral students whose license is neither North Carolina's nor multistate should write to the Board's Licensure Department, through its Email Us form, and ask what clinical work in the state will require. North Carolina joined SARA in June 2016, the Board adds, and a student enrolled at a SARA-approved college may be able to do field placements in North Carolina while taking that college's coursework. Loyola takes part in NC-SARA.
Restricted practice, seen from the exam room
On AANP's scale North Carolina is restricted. North Carolina NPs never outgrow the physician agreement; it lasts a career. Licensing for NPs belongs to a Joint Subcommittee with members from both the nursing and medical boards. Each NP preceptor you meet practices under such an agreement, so ask early how it shapes their day.
Physicians can also precept. Loyola's FNP guide opens NURS G823 and NURS G827 to MDs, DOs and PAs as well as NPs, which gives a North Carolina practice two routes to a qualified preceptor. Check each role against Loyola's preceptor rules.
Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Winston-Salem
Four metros set the geography. Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia counted about 2.48 million North Carolinians in 2025, Raleigh-Cary near 1.6 million, and the neighboring Greensboro-High Point and Winston-Salem metros about 806,000 and 712,000. Duke Health, ECU Health, Novant Health and UNC Health appear on any list of the state's largest systems, along with Charlotte's Atrium Health, today part of Advocate Health.

License rules for a North Carolina site
- North Carolina joined the Nurse Licensure Compact when it launched in January 2018, so a multistate license covers clinical work here.
- A single-state RN license from somewhere else means a message to the Board's Licensure Department before clinicals, as its education FAQ directs.
- Loyola separately requires a Louisiana or multistate RN license for your entire enrollment.
- No APRN Compact law exists in North Carolina; after graduation, NP licensure runs through the Joint Subcommittee.

Questions Loyola students ask
Must the North Carolina Board of Nursing approve Loyola before my clinicals?
The Board says graduate and doctoral programs, in-state or out, fall outside its approval authority, and its 30-day approval process covers students not yet licensed. The step that can apply to you is a licensing one: without a North Carolina or multistate license, contact its Licensure Department first.
My RN license comes from Louisiana. What happens before a North Carolina practicum?
It depends on the license type. A multistate Louisiana license reaches North Carolina through the compact. A single-state license does not, and the Board asks graduate students in that position to write to its Licensure Department and ask what applies. Either way, Loyola needs your RN license active in North Carolina before the first practicum hour.
Can I train in South Carolina if I live near Charlotte?
Loyola's map approves South Carolina for all programs, so a clinic across the line is possible. You need an RN license active in South Carolina, your preceptor needs a license current there, and the site needs a Loyola affiliation agreement. Who licenses nurse practitioners in North Carolina after I graduate?
NP licensure sits with a Joint Subcommittee representing the nursing and medical boards, and every NP, new or veteran, practices under a physician agreement that lasts a career. Loyola notes that after graduation the licensing rules of the state where you practice apply, so plan for that step before your final term ends.
