Loyola New Orleans NP practicums in South Carolina
Loyola University New Orleans lists South Carolina as meeting requirements on its June 2, 2026 licensure table and approved for all programs on its July 15, 2026 State Approvals Map, so an online Loyola student can live and train here. What deserves your attention is South Carolina law: how NPs practice, which schools the state's outside-program rule was written for, and who can claim its preceptor tax break.

Practice agreements sit behind every NP preceptor
AANP rates South Carolina restricted. Delegated medical acts by an NP rest on a signed physician practice agreement, and the state caps the controlled-substance supply an NP can hand a patient. Your NP preceptor's scope, prescribing included, is whatever that agreement allows.
Loyola's standards stack on the state's. Your preceptor holds a South Carolina license that is current and unencumbered, is board certified, has logged over 2,080 hours in practice and is not related to you. The preceptor requirements page explains each point, including which Family Primary Care Management courses take a physician or PA.
Regulation 91-6 was written for pre-licensure schools
Chapter 91 of the state's regulations holds the rule for nursing schools headquartered outside South Carolina. Before one of them runs clinicals leading to a first nursing license, the Board of Nursing must approve it, and the school must meet a list of conditions: good standing at home, a faculty member on shift with a South Carolina or Compact license, a signed affiliation agreement, and preceptorships that follow South Carolina's rules.
APRN programs and RN-to-BSN programs sit outside that text. For Loyola's FNP, PMHNP, AGACNP and DNP students, the School of Nursing's map is the guide, and the site's agreement with Loyola is the document that counts. Loyola trains its BSN and ABSN students in Greater New Orleans, so they never meet this rule.
A tax break your preceptor cannot use for you
Under S.C. Code 12-6-3800, unpaid physicians, APRNs and PAs who serve Medicaid patients above set thresholds can take a state income tax credit, and a deduction beyond it, for precepting. They need two or more rotations in a year, each lasting 160 hours or longer in qualifying settings. Lawmakers pushed the end date out to tax year 2029 in 2024, though a Revenue ruling still lists the earlier 2026 sunset.
Eligibility follows the student's school: it has to be a South Carolina public or independent institution. Time spent teaching a Loyola New Orleans student earns nothing under this law.
Mention the tax credit limit in your first message to a South Carolina preceptor, so nobody discovers it after saying yes.
Upstate, Midlands and Lowcountry
Census Bureau figures for 2025 show Greenville-Anderson-Greer crossing the one million mark. Columbia (roughly 880,000) and Charleston-North Charleston (roughly 889,000) come next, and about 454,000 residents of the state sit inside the Charlotte metro.
MUSC Health, Lexington Health, Prisma Health, Roper St. Francis Healthcare and McLeod Health are among the systems you will come across. Every one of them sets its own student onboarding. Search Explore Clinical Locations before calling anyone: an organization already under a Loyola agreement clears quickly, and a brand-new agreement is usually the slowest step.
Near Charlotte, a North Carolina clinic is another option on Loyola's map, as long as both licenses, yours and the preceptor's, are active there.
One multistate license covers both states
The Nurse Licensure Compact took effect in South Carolina in January 2018 and in Louisiana in July 2019. Living in South Carolina with its multistate RN license, you are licensed for practice in both places, which answers Loyola's two graduate license rules together. See the RN license page for timing and Nursys e-Notify.
The APRN Compact is another story. South Carolina is not among the five states that have passed it, and it cannot operate until seven do, so your NP license later is a South Carolina application.
Why Loyola students in South Carolina choose us
We build a South Carolina search to Loyola's specifications: preceptors licensed in the state who fit your course, a check of Loyola's agreement list, and a Wishlist packet with CV, license, Nursys PDF and signed Preceptor Agreement ready. We bring up the tax credit with preceptors before it causes friction, track the three-month lead time and line up the next preceptor quickly if one withdraws. Loyola's placement office and faculty give the approval, and the request they receive is complete. Tell us your county and term.
Questions Loyola students ask
Can I study in Loyola New Orleans' online FNP program from South Carolina?
Yes. Both Loyola sources clear the state. Because FNP practicums happen near home, you choose a South Carolina preceptor and site, keep your RN license active in the state and hold a Louisiana or multistate license throughout enrollment.
Does the South Carolina Board of Nursing have to approve my Loyola practicum?
The state's outside-school rule, regulation 91-6, concerns clinicals toward a first nursing license and says nothing about APRN programs. Loyola's School of Nursing shows South Carolina approved for all programs. Should a clinic raise the question, forward it to the Clinical Practicum Coordinator, the Loyola office that manages agreements and compliance.
Will Loyola accept a PA as my South Carolina preceptor?
In NURS G823 and NURS G827, the first two Family Primary Care Management practicums, Loyola's FNP guide allows an NP, MD, DO or PA. FPCM III must match its pediatric and obstetric focus, and cohorts that began before Fall 2024 work from an older letter, so check with course faculty. Whoever precepts needs an unencumbered South Carolina license.
What happens if I move to South Carolina partway through my program?
Talk to your program advisor before the move; Loyola warns that relocating can change licensure, practicum access and financial aid. The state is approved on Loyola's map, but you will need an RN license valid here and a new local site, which often brings a new affiliation agreement. Start with moving during your program.
