Loyola New Orleans nursing students in Virginia
Every Loyola University New Orleans nursing program is approved for Virginia, and Virginia's nursing board asks nothing of out-of-state graduate programs before you start. Two things deserve early attention: a newer Virginia NP practices under an agreement with a physician, and if you live in Northern Virginia, Loyola's licensure table keeps clinical rotations out of Washington, DC for now.

A board that stays out of graduate programs
Ask Virginia's Board of Nursing about a Louisiana graduate program and its education page gives a short answer: schools based elsewhere, and any post-licensure program, are not its to approve. Two rules you may come across, the 80% in-state clinical requirement and the site approvals in 18VAC90-27, apply to pre-licensure schools that Virginia itself approves. No Board filing stands between you and a Virginia site.
State law also carries a student clause. Va. Code 54.1-3001 excuses an RN from Virginia licensure while enrolled in an advanced program that requires clinical practice, if the nurse's current, unrestricted license comes from a U.S. territory, DC or some other state; the excuse stretches no further than the clinical work that curriculum demands. Loyola's handbook sets its own bar regardless: an RN license active in every state where you do practicum hours.
Restricted practice, and what it means for your preceptor
AANP places Virginia in its restricted category. There, an NP's early career runs through a practice agreement signed with a patient care team physician, and the NP can step out of it after attesting that their clinical practice adds up to three full-time years or the equivalent. Every NP you approach is on one side of that line, and either side can precept a Loyola student who clears the preceptor requirements.
The physician partner is worth asking too: Loyola's 2025 FNP guide takes an MD or DO, as well as an NP or PA, for FPCM I and II.
Northern Virginia and the District line
About 3.18 million Virginians live inside the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria metro, per 2025 Census estimates. Here Loyola's sources disagree. The June 2, 2026 advanced practice table says clinical rotations must currently happen outside Washington, DC, while the July 15, 2026 map shows DC green. Until the School of Nursing tells you otherwise, keep DC clinics off your list; the licensure disclosures page sets both sources side by side.
Maryland's suburbs raise a different point: Loyola's map approves Maryland for all programs, but a Maryland clinic needs your RN license active in Maryland.
Hampton Roads, Richmond and Roanoke
Away from the DC suburbs, 2025 estimates count about 1.74 million Virginians in the Virginia Beach-Chesapeake-Norfolk metro, around 1.39 million in greater Richmond and near 317,000 in the Roanoke area. Inova and Sentara Health are two of the state's largest systems; Carilion Clinic belongs on that list too, as do UVA Health and VCU Health, and each runs its own student channel. Search Loyola's Explore Clinical Locations map before any cold call; a site that already holds a Loyola agreement skips the longest wait.
Your license for a Virginia site
Since January 19, 2018, Virginia RN licenses can be multistate, and one with Virginia as your home state works at your site and also covers Loyola's rule that enrolled graduate students keep a Louisiana or multistate license. Can I do Loyola clinicals in Washington, DC if I live in Arlington?
Plan on Virginia instead. Loyola's June 2, 2026 advanced practice table says clinical rotations must currently be done outside Washington, DC, even though the July 15, 2026 map shows DC green. Ask the School of Nursing before you contact any DC preceptor, and keep a Virginia site as your working plan.
Must the Virginia Board of Nursing approve Loyola before my practicum?
No. Virginia's Board describes its approval work as covering neither schools from other states nor post-licensure programs, and its clinical-site rules are written for Virginia's pre-licensure schools. Your steps are Loyola's: an active RN license for Virginia, a qualified preceptor, a signed affiliation agreement and Placement Approved in Exxat.
Will my Virginia preceptor receive the state's preceptor incentive?
Not for teaching you. The state's Nurse Preceptor Incentive Program looks at where the student is enrolled, and that must be a nursing school in Virginia that is public or private nonprofit. A preceptor teaching a Louisiana program's student sits outside it. Frame your request around what you bring: a clear schedule, a defined course and paperwork that arrives complete.
I'm a Nurse-Midwifery or Nurse Anesthesia student in Virginia. Do I find my own site?
Those programs place students. Nurse Anesthesia students are assigned to program-affiliated sites, and the Nurse-Midwifery handbook says the program provides clinical sites, mostly in Louisiana. The bulletin's midwifery certificate entry mentions home-area preceptors instead, a conflict to raise with your program director before you plan around a Virginia site.
