Loyola University New Orleans nursing students in California
California is limited to the FNP on Loyola University New Orleans' State Approvals Map, a restriction the School of Nursing shows on its current July 15, 2026 map and on the older August 20, 2025 version. Loyola's June 2, 2026 licensure table, by contrast, gives California a plain "meets" with no restriction. If you want a non-FNP track from California, or plan to move there, get the School of Nursing's position on your program before you enroll.

California on each Loyola document
For Loyola's three FNP routes (MSN, BSN-DNP and certificate), the two sources agree that California is open. For acute care, psychiatric and other tracks they part ways, since only the map carries the limit. Loyola does not say which one controls, so the School of Nursing has to rule on your track. Before you apply, while you live here, if you move here
- Applicants in California: name your exact track when you contact the School of Nursing. The answer for the FNP may not be the answer for the AGACNP or PMHNP.
- Enrolled non-FNP students living in California: if the map's limit covers you, ask whether a site in another approved state is an option, and what travel and licensing it would take.

California also sits outside NC-SARA, the reciprocity agreement Loyola belongs to; the questions below explain what that does and does not change.
The Board of Registered Nursing's rules for outside NP programs
Under 16 CCR 1486(d), an NP student whose program is based outside California may take part in clinical experiences there only while holding a California RN license that is current and valid. The regulation also screens the preceptor, who needs an active California license in their own discipline and must be qualified for the NP category you are pursuing.
The regulation also gives the school jobs to do. Preceptors receive an orientation from the program; faculty review each preceptor's work at least once every two years; and the agency, preceptor and program put the preceptor's role in writing in a three-way agreement. Because those duties belong to Loyola, the Clinical Practicum Coordinator is the one to ask how a California site would be handled.
Practice setting and California search areas
AANP places California in its restricted practice group: California NPs need a standardized protocol agreement for certain procedures and settings, though the Board of Registered Nursing recognizes exemptions. That rule governs how your preceptor practices; Loyola's own preceptor rules decide whether they can supervise you.
Population centers run from greater Los Angeles and the Inland Empire to the Bay Area and San Diego. Familiar systems include Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health with its Northern and Central California footprint, UC Health's campuses from UC Davis to UC San Diego, Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and Stanford Health Care. These mark where NP students search; hours at any of them wait on a signed Loyola affiliation agreement.
Holding a California RN license
California has stayed out of the Nurse Licensure Compact with no joining bill in motion, so a compact license from elsewhere does nothing for you there. The APRN Compact is not law in California either, and before the state certifies anyone as an NP, it requires a California RN license. For a Loyola student, that adds up to a California license for any practicum hours in the state, plus the Louisiana or multistate license Loyola expects throughout enrollment. Questions Loyola students ask
Can I do Loyola New Orleans' PMHNP program from California?
Loyola's sources conflict. The map dated July 15, 2026 approves California for the FNP only, which leaves the PMHNP out, while the June 2, 2026 licensure table shows California meeting requirements without any note. Have the School of Nursing answer for your track before you apply, and keep that answer with your records.
Will my Louisiana or compact license let me train in California?
No. California makes NP students from programs based in other states hold a California RN license, current and valid, before any clinical experience there, and compact licenses do not reach California at all. Loyola's rule that your license be active where you train leads to the same place, so apply for the California license well before your first practicum term.
Is California a SARA state for online nursing programs?
No. Loyola takes part in NC-SARA, but California does not participate, and Loyola says California does not ask it to register online programs that have no physical footprint in the state. SARA never settles licensing questions in any state, so the California RN license rule and the map's FNP-only restriction still stand.
Does the California restriction affect Loyola's BSN?
Loyola's pre-licensure BSN table lists California as meeting requirements. Loyola's BSN and accelerated BSN students do their clinicals around Greater New Orleans, so California students in those programs train in Louisiana. If you plan to seek a California license after graduating, California's own licensing rules will govern that step.
What if I move to California partway through my program?
Talk with your program advisor before the move, since Loyola links relocation to changes in licensure, practicum access and aid. The map's FNP-only restriction could decide whether hours in California count for your track, and any clinical time there needs a California RN license first.
