Loyola New Orleans from Idaho: your practicum guide
Loyola University New Orleans approves Idaho for all of its nursing programs, and the state's full practice environment gives you a wide field of NP preceptors, in Boise and in smaller metros such as Twin Falls. Check two things before you commit to a site: the Idaho Board's policy on a preceptor's license level, and which neighboring states Loyola's map leaves out.

How Idaho handles out-of-state APRN students
Approval of nursing programs operating in Idaho is governed by Idaho Code 54-1406 and by IDAPA 24.34.01.150. Neither contains a provision aimed at clinical placements arranged by a school based in another state. The Board, which sits within Idaho's Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses, points out-of-state schools to its licensing staff for questions about requirements, making this a school-to-board matter rather than something you file.
Your own status is set by IDAPA 24.34.01.100.12.a. It lets a matriculated student in a nationally accredited APRN program, who is an RN holding either a current Idaho license or a compact privilege, practice as an APRN where the curriculum makes that practice integral. Loyola's master's and DNP programs hold CCNE accreditation.
The Idaho preceptor policy to check first
Since April 10, 2024, Board policy HP-BON-Education 1 has required every nursing program's clinical preceptors to be licensed at least at the level of the student's intended role. A licensed NP plainly fits for an FNP student. MDs, DOs and, in FPCM I and II, PAs are acceptable under Loyola's FNP guide too; how Idaho's policy treats a PA or physician is worth putting to the Clinical Practicum Coordinator before that name reaches your Wishlist.
Faculty get a parallel rule. Those who teach nursing courses need a current, unencumbered Idaho RN license, and primary responsibility for the APRN role and population courses calls for an Idaho APRN license. Applying that to an online program is Loyola's call, and one more reason to raise an Idaho site early. Idaho sits in AANP's full practice category, and Loyola's preceptor requirements still apply in full.
Boise, North Idaho and the eastern cities
Census Bureau estimates for 2025 give the Boise City metro about 864,000 residents, the largest in Idaho. Coeur d'Alene follows at roughly 192,000, with Idaho Falls near 174,000 and Twin Falls near 124,000. Health systems to know are Saint Alphonsus Health System, St. Luke's Health System and Kootenai Health, the last based in Coeur d'Alene; their own pages set out how each handles student requests.
All four Loyola FNP practicums are outpatient primary care, so independent family practices and community clinics belong on your list beside the big systems. Check Loyola's Explore Clinical Locations map first for any Idaho site already under agreement.
Licensing, and the border states to watch
Idaho has offered multistate RN licenses from January 19, 2018 onward. With one, your Idaho site is covered, and so is Loyola's requirement of a Louisiana or multistate license for as long as you are enrolled. Idaho is not among the states that have enacted the APRN Compact. Timing details are on the RN license page.
Crossing a state line takes care. Loyola's July 2026 map marks Montana and Wyoming not approved; the licensure table dated June 2026 says both meet requirements, so confirm with the School of Nursing before planning hours there. Utah and Washington are approved and in the compact. Oregon and Nevada are approved as well but sit outside the compact, so a site there calls for that state's own RN license.

Questions Loyola students ask
Can I complete Loyola New Orleans practicum hours in Boise?
Yes. On Loyola's July 2026 map Idaho is green for every School of Nursing program, and the June 2026 licensure table agrees. The preceptor and site are yours to propose, and the placement office arranges the affiliation agreement. Start no later than three months ahead of your practicum term, and keep a second Idaho site in mind.
Does Idaho require Loyola to get Board approval before I train there?
Idaho's approval rules are written for programs located inside the state, and they carry no specific provision for placements by schools elsewhere. The Board's site asks those schools to contact its licensing staff with questions, which is a step for Loyola. What falls to you is an active Idaho or multistate RN license and a preceptor who fits both sets of rules.
Can a physician assistant precept me in Idaho?
Loyola's FNP guide allows PAs for FPCM I and II. Idaho's Board policy, though, sets a floor for clinical preceptors: a license at the level of the student's target role or higher. Put the question of how Loyola reads that policy to the Clinical Practicum Coordinator before you submit a PA-led site in Idaho.
Can I do clinicals in Montana or Wyoming if I live in eastern Idaho?
Not without checking first. Loyola's State Approvals Map (July 15, 2026) marks both states not approved, while its licensure table (June 2, 2026) lists them as meeting requirements. With the sources in conflict, confirm with the School of Nursing before counting on any hours there. Utah, a compact state, is approved for all programs.
