Loyola New Orleans practicums in Washington State
Loyola University New Orleans lists Washington as approved for all nursing programs. Washington adds its own gate: WAC 246-840-571 asks any distance nursing program headquartered outside the state to win approval from WABON, the state's nursing board, before its students log clinical hours there. WABON approves the program first
Washington holds distance programs from other states to a formal approval, and Loyola, not you, would carry each piece of it:
- An application to WABON showing the program matches Washington's own standards
- Oversight and evaluation of students while they train in Washington
- Accreditation from a national nursing accreditor, maintained without a lapse
- A report filed with WABON every year
- Washington ARNP licenses for program faculty who teach ARNP practice on Washington soil
RN-BSN, MSN and NP tracks all appear on WABON's roster of approved programs. WABON also reserves approved out-of-state placements for people who live in Washington, deciding any exception case by case. So the question for the Clinical Practicum Coordinator has two parts: does Loyola's approval reach your program, and does your residence fit?
Who can precept an ARNP student here
Two preceptor tests come from Washington's education rules. One is license type: ARNP, MD or DO, active and unencumbered, with another state's equivalent accepted. The other is distance from the student: relatives are out, and so are personal friends. Loyola's FNP guide already bars family, and Washington stretches the bar to your social circle.
PAs do not appear among those license types, even though Loyola's FNP guide lets a PA oversee FPCM I and II, so a Washington FPCM plan rests on NPs and physicians. With AANP rating Washington full practice, an NP-owned clinic can host you with no physician involved, provided the NP satisfies Loyola's preceptor requirements.
Seattle, Spokane and the Columbia River
Greater Seattle, the Census Bureau's Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metro, had about 4.16 million residents by the 2025 estimates, several times Spokane-Spokane Valley's 608,000 or Kennewick-Richland's 324,000. Another 545,000 Washingtonians live in the state's share of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro.
Big names include Providence, whose headquarters is in Renton and whose family takes in Providence Swedish, as well as PeaceHealth, MultiCare Health System, Virginia Mason Franciscan Health and UW Medicine. Check each system's own student pages, and scan Loyola's Explore Clinical Locations map for Washington sites already under agreement.
Near a border, compare before you commit. Oregon and Idaho are both green on Loyola's map, yet each has its own rules, and your RN license must be active in whichever state the clinic sits.
Your license, and a rulebook under review
Multistate RN licenses have been available in Washington only since January 31, 2024, when its compact membership took effect. Holding one as a Washington resident covers your site and Loyola's Louisiana-or-multistate rule for the whole program. No APRN Compact law exists in Washington. The rules themselves may shift. WABON opened rulemaking, through a CR-101 filing dated December 5, 2025, on sections 246-840-500 to 246-840-571 of the state code, and easing clinical placement barriers is on the agenda, so look at the current text each term.

Can Loyola New Orleans students do clinicals in Washington State?
Loyola's July 15, 2026 map says yes for every program. Washington's own condition is WABON approval of the out-of-state distance program before any placement, and WABON keeps approved placements for residents of Washington. Put both points to the Clinical Practicum Coordinator before you sign up a preceptor.
I live in Portland. Could I use a clinic in Vancouver, Washington?
Only through an exception, which WABON weighs case by case, since approved out-of-state placements are meant for people living in Washington. An Oregon resident has a simpler path in Oregon: Loyola's map approves it for all programs, and your RN license and your preceptor's license would need to be active there.
Could a friend who works as an ARNP precept me?
Washington says no: its nursing education rules exclude preceptors who are relatives or personal friends of the student, and Loyola's FNP guide bars family members as well. Look for an ARNP, MD or DO you know only through work, with an active, unencumbered license and a practice that matches your Loyola course.
Will Washington's preceptor grant pay someone teaching me?
It will not. WABON's student nurse preceptorship grant excludes programs based in other states, even when every clinical hour happens in Washington. Offer a preceptor other value instead: a student who knows the course, a clear schedule and paperwork that is ready the day they agree.
