Maryland practicums for Loyola New Orleans students
Loyola University New Orleans approves Maryland for every nursing program. Three Maryland features help a student hunting for a preceptor there: state law exempts graduate APRN students from separate licensure, the state belongs to the nurse compact, and Maryland's tax code rewards some NP preceptors for teaching.

The tax credit that makes Maryland unusual
Section 10-739 of Maryland's Tax-General article sets up an income tax credit for teaching NP students. Eligible teachers are NPs and licensed physicians who take no pay for precepting and work inside a Board-approved preceptorship. To earn it, a preceptor logs three or more community-based rotations, every one lasting 90 hours or more, in places the state health department has identified as short of health workers.
Each qualifying rotation earns a fixed credit, a single preceptor's total is limited per year, and the statewide pool has its own annual ceiling. The law is set to expire on June 30, 2030. Its text speaks of NP students in programs the State Board of Nursing recognizes, so a preceptor weighing a Loyola student should ask the Maryland Department of Health whether that rotation would count.
How Maryland law sees a Loyola student
Maryland's Nurse Practice Act (Health Occupations 8-301(d)(2)) excuses a graduate student from separate licensure for advanced practice work done inside an accredited APRN program. The Board of Nursing treats schools from other states as a question that comes up at licensure: on its education page you will find an equivalency assessment and approved and non-approved prelicensure rosters, but no step a graduate student clears before clinicals.
Online enrollment has its own rule in Maryland, and SARA answers it. COMAR 13B.05.01.02 asks out-of-state schools to register with the Higher Education Commission, except schools approved to participate in SARA; Loyola is a SARA participant. Loyola's listing, and a caution at the D.C. line
Maryland itself raises no questions in Loyola's sources: both approve it outright.

If you live in the Washington suburbs, a clinic across the District line looks convenient, but Loyola has not settled it. Its licensure table says clinicals must happen outside D.C.; its approvals map shows D.C. green. Where Maryland students look
Greater Baltimore holds nearly 2.9 million people by 2025 Census counts, and Maryland's share of the Washington region adds a little over 2.5 million; Hagerstown and Lexington Park are much smaller. Johns Hopkins Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical System anchor Baltimore's academic medicine, while MedStar Health, Luminis Health and LifeBridge Health also operate across the state. Each runs its own student intake.
AANP rates Maryland full practice. The one condition: a newly licensed NP attests to a year and a half of mentoring by a physician or an experienced certified NP. Loyola's preceptor requirements call for more than twelve months in practice, so an NP near the end of that mentoring period can still be a candidate.
Compact licensing covers the site and the school
Maryland's compact membership went live in January 2018, and its regulation COMAR 10.27.01.03(B) confirms that nurses practicing on a multistate privilege follow Maryland law while they work there. For you, a Maryland-issued multistate license is active at the practicum site and also satisfies Loyola's rule that enrolled graduate students keep a Louisiana or multistate license. Questions Loyola students ask
Is my Maryland preceptor eligible for the NP preceptor tax credit?
Possibly. The credit targets unpaid teaching in community settings within shortage areas, and the statute describes students from Board-recognized nursing programs; three qualifying rotations are the minimum. The preceptor should check with MDH whether a Loyola rotation fits before counting on it; the state runs the credit, not Loyola.
Do I need a separate Maryland student license for NP clinicals?
No separate student license: Maryland's statute exempts graduate APRN students practicing within an accredited program. Loyola adds its own requirement that your RN license be active wherever the practicum happens, which a multistate license from Maryland or another compact state takes care of.
Can I do Loyola clinicals in Washington, D.C.?
Loyola's own sources disagree. The June 2026 licensure table says clinicals must be done outside the District, while the July 2026 approvals map shows D.C. approved. Until the School of Nursing tells you which applies, plan your practicum at Maryland sites and treat any D.C. option as unconfirmed.
What does MBON check before certifying a Loyola graduate as an NP?
MBON approves NP programs before certifying their graduates. If Loyola's program were not yet on MBON's roster, Loyola itself would send the Program Approval Form; graduates do not file it. Loyola's table shows Maryland as meeting educational requirements, so raise the list question with the School of Nursing during your final year.
