Rhode Island practicums with Loyola New Orleans: confirm first
Loyola University New Orleans gives Rhode Island two answers. Its School of Nursing State Approvals Map dated July 15, 2026 colors the state green for all programs, while the August 20, 2025 version, which Loyola's state authorization pages still link, marks it red for not approved. Before you enroll or promise a Rhode Island site your hours, get the School of Nursing's current answer for your program and keep it.

Four Loyola entries for one small state
Three of the four line up, and the newer map is the one on the School of Nursing's resources page. The older file, though, is still what the state authorization pages point to, and Rhode Island is the one state whose color differs between the two map files.

Rhode Island's own rules for clinical placements
The Rhode Island regulation covering nurse licensing and nursing education (216-RICR-40-05-3) mostly concerns approval of the state's own basic nursing programs by its Board of Nurse Registration and Nursing Education. One provision touches clinical sites: when a Board-approved Rhode Island program signs with a clinical agency, the agreement has to demonstrate that the program takes an active part in a statewide central registry for clinical placements.
Schools based in other states go unmentioned in that provision. If a Rhode Island hospital or clinic brings it up, pass the question to the Clinical Practicum Coordinator, the office that obtains Loyola's affiliation agreements.
Full practice, and who can precept you
AANP rates Rhode Island a full practice state. Loyola's own bar for preceptors applies regardless: an active, unencumbered Rhode Island license, board certification, over a year (2,080 hours) in practice, no family connection, and presence on site for each hour you count. A DNP project preceptor also may not be your employer or direct supervisor. Preceptor requirements has the full picture.
Providence and the two neighbors
Providence-Warwick is the metro to know: about 1.71 million residents in the 2025 Census estimates, with roughly 1.11 million on the Rhode Island side and the remainder in Massachusetts. For research, look at South County Health; at Care New England Health System; at Brown University Health; and at CharterCARE Health of Rhode Island. Treat these as leads.
Massachusetts and neighboring Connecticut both show as approved for all programs on Loyola's map, which makes either a sensible backup whatever the School of Nursing says about Rhode Island. Your license: multistate at home, not yet in Massachusetts
January 1, 2024 brought Rhode Island back into the Nurse Licensure Compact. By the Rhode Island Department of Health's account, RN licenses issued to qualified residents since that date are multistate. Holding one covers a Rhode Island site and meets Loyola's rule that enrolled graduate students carry a Louisiana or multistate license.
Massachusetts is the catch. Its lawmakers passed the compact in November 2024, but the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing says it stays out of effect until implementation is done, with May 2027 as the target. Is Rhode Island approved for Loyola New Orleans nursing programs?
Loyola's sources split. The July 15, 2026 State Approvals Map and both June 2, 2026 licensure tables say yes; the August 20, 2025 map, still linked from the state authorization pages, shows Rhode Island not approved. Confirm with the School of Nursing for your specific program before enrolling or committing to a site.
Will Loyola tell me if Rhode Island's status changes?
Loyola's disclosure page commits to notifying enrolled students within 14 calendar days when a state determination changes. Distance students also receive a direct email disclosure, at their first financial commitment, when a program does not meet a state's requirements. Watch your Loyola email between terms.
Could I do my Loyola practicum in Connecticut instead?
Loyola's map approves Connecticut for all programs, and no Loyola source contradicts that. The site follows Connecticut's rules, and your preceptor needs a Connecticut license. Since Connecticut's compact implementation on October 1, 2025, a multistate license from Rhode Island has reached Connecticut sites as well.
Do Rhode Island clinical sites use a placement registry?
Under the state rule, Rhode Island's own programs must prove registry involvement in their clinical contracts; out-of-state schools go unmentioned. A site may still ask. Loyola itself handles graduate requests through Exxat, with the Wishlist and Placement Approved, so let the coordinator answer any registry question a site raises.
