Doing Loyola New Orleans practicum hours in Massachusetts
Loyola University New Orleans approves Massachusetts for all of its nursing programs, so the enrollment question is settled. Licensing is the Massachusetts puzzle: the state has signed on to the nurse compact, yet the change has not taken effect, which means a practicum there runs on a Massachusetts RN license.

A compact law still waiting to switch on
The compact bill became Massachusetts law late in 2024. Its practical effect is on hold: the nursing board regards the compact as dormant until rollout is done, and it has pencilled in May 2027, having won a conditional green light on FBI fingerprint checks this past May. NCSBN's own table lists no Massachusetts start date. For now, every nurse working in the state goes through the ordinary Massachusetts application.
Two things follow for a Loyola student. First, the multistate card in your wallet, if another compact state issued it, stops at the Massachusetts border for the time being; only a Massachusetts license opens a site here. Second, that license is single-state for now, which leaves Loyola's Louisiana-or-multistate enrollment rule to be met another way, typically with a Louisiana license held alongside it. Holding a multistate license from Maine or any other compact state does not yet let you train at a Massachusetts site.
244 CMR 6.03 and schools based elsewhere
Massachusetts spells out a formal route for nursing schools based in other states. The regulation, 244 CMR 6.03(2), has a school headquartered outside the state seek Board sign-off for Massachusetts clinical learning in two filings: Part A, renewed yearly and due six months before any placement, and Part B for each placement, due 30 days before it starts. Students begin only after the Board's approval letter, and faculty and preceptor ratios are capped at 1:10 and 1:2.
Read closely, though, the criteria concern schools readying graduates to sit for the NCLEX, and nothing on that Board page mentions master's, doctoral or APRN training. Loyola's BSN and ABSN clinicals take place in Greater New Orleans, so the prelicensure version is unlikely to touch a Loyola student; whether any part reaches a graduate placement is a question for the Clinical Practicum Coordinator, who handles site agreements.
Boston, Worcester, Springfield and the Providence edge
Greater Boston accounts for roughly 4.58 million people on the Massachusetts side, per 2025 Census estimates; the Worcester metro adds about 889,000 and Springfield about 464,000. Students there tend to hear first about Mass General Brigham, then Beth Israel Lahey Health; the state's larger systems also include Boston Medical Center, plus Baystate Health and UMass Memorial Health.
Roughly 594,000 Massachusetts residents live inside the Providence metro, and a site over the line brings a Loyola wrinkle: the current approvals map shows Rhode Island approved, while the older August 2025 map, still linked, shows it not approved. Read the Rhode Island guide first.
On practice authority, AANP places Massachusetts in the full practice group, reached after an NP's first two years of supervision by a physician or qualifying APRN; equivalent prior experience can sometimes substitute.

Can a multistate RN license from elsewhere cover Massachusetts clinical hours?
Not at the moment. The compact is on the Massachusetts books, yet the state's nursing board says it confers nothing until rollout wraps up, with May 2027 as the goal. Practicum hours are nursing practice, so a Massachusetts site requires a Massachusetts license in the meantime.
Do I need both a Massachusetts and a Louisiana license for Loyola?
For most students living in Massachusetts, yes for now. Loyola wants an active license in the practicum state and, while you are enrolled, a Louisiana or multistate license. A Massachusetts license is single-state until the compact takes effect, so a Louisiana license usually fills the second requirement.
Is there a Massachusetts filing Loyola makes before graduate clinicals?
The Board's rule for out-of-state programs (244 CMR 6.03) is written around programs preparing students for the NCLEX, with yearly and per-placement filings. How it applies to a graduate NP placement is for Loyola's Clinical Practicum Coordinator to confirm, so raise it when you propose a Massachusetts site.
I am relocating to Massachusetts mid-program. What changes?
