Who can precept a Loyola student

Loyola's FNP Orientation and Practicum Guide sets the baseline for NP-track preceptors.

• A license that is current, active and unencumbered in the site's state
• Board certification: NPs board certified, physicians holding an MD or DO and board certified in their specialty
• Over a year in practice, defined in the guide as 2,080 hours
• No immediate or extended family relationship with the student
• Present on site at all times, directly supervising every hour, and able to give constructive feedback

The course shapes the rest. FPCM I and II can be supervised by an NP, MD, DO or PA; FPCM III needs a practice that suits its pediatric and obstetric population; specialty sites for FPCM IV need the FNP Director's approval. For DNP Scholarly Project work, Loyola's letter lists leaders such as nursing administrators, directors and chief officers alongside APRNs and physicians, excluding the student's relative, employer or direct supervisor. The affiliation agreement your site signs

Before a student logs any hours, Loyola and the facility need a signed agreement. Loyola keeps hundreds of organizations under active agreements; if yours is not among them, the Standard Loyola Affiliation Agreement for 2026-27 is a three-year contract signed by the site's authorized signer. Under it the facility provides the orientation it considers necessary, Loyola names a faculty member to coordinate with you, no payment passes between Loyola and the site, and the student receives no pay.

A site may use its own contract instead, but heavily edited or site-written agreements can take several months, so the standard form is the quicker path for a student with a term approaching. The School of Nursing covers students' practicum hours with its own malpractice policy and posts certificates of liability insurance for sites, and Loyola faculty keep a contractual right to visit the site. Louisiana sites: rules from the state board

For a Louisiana practice, the state board's graduate preceptorship rule, LAC 46:XLVII.3543, applies alongside Loyola's requirements. It requires a Louisiana RN and/or APRN license that is active and unencumbered, and it caps you at two graduate APRN students in a clinical experience at one time. The limit applies per preceptor, so tell the Loyola student if you already supervise two.

The same rule leaves nursing faculty responsible for choosing learning experiences and evaluating the student, with your input, and has faculty confer with you and the student at least once a week. Most of a graduate student's clinical time belongs with an APRN who shares the student's population focus, while physicians and other clinicians can add interprofessional experience.
