Indiana practicum hours for Loyola New Orleans students
Loyola University New Orleans approves Indiana for all School of Nursing programs. Indiana's nursing board confines its program reviews to schools preparing people for a first RN or LPN license, so a Loyola graduate student files nothing with the state. What remains is finding an NP or physician who fits your Loyola course in Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, or the Indiana slices of the Chicago and Louisville metros.

An Indiana resident can plan practicum hours at home in Loyola's online FNP or DNP tracks, or around campus intensives in a hybrid track. Speak with your program advisor before any move across state lines, because moving mid-program can change your license and practicum options.
Indiana's board reviews initial-licensure programs only
Indiana's State Board of Nursing, which belongs to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency, accredits in-state programs whose graduates sit for an initial RN or LPN license. Its education page is direct about the limit: RN-BSN programs and graduate nursing programs are not reviewed or accredited by the Board. The eligible-program rule, 848 IAC 1-2-4, likewise reaches only programs preparing RNs and PNs for first licensure.
For you, that means the paperwork that decides an Indiana placement is Loyola's own: the facility's affiliation agreement with Loyola, the Wishlist and the preceptor documents. A site that has never hosted a Loyola student needs the agreement signed before any hours count, so bring it forward early and keep a backup.
Collaborative practice and your preceptor options
AANP places Indiana in its reduced practice group, because at least one element of NP practice there runs under a regulated collaborative agreement with a physician. The NP you contact already works with a physician collaborator, and physician preceptors are a natural second option, since board-certified MDs and DOs qualify under Loyola's FNP guide, as do PAs in FPCM I and II.
Every preceptor must also clear Loyola's bar: board certification, a current, active and unencumbered Indiana license, over a year of practice, no family connection to you, and presence on site for each hour. Indianapolis, Fort Wayne and the border metros
The Indianapolis-Carmel-Greenwood metro holds about 2.2 million people and the Fort Wayne metro about 466,000, going by 2025 Census Bureau figures. Two large metros reach in from neighbors: Indiana's share of the Chicago metro is roughly 729,000 people, and its share of the Louisville metro about 281,000.

Your license, and the Illinois exception
Since July 1, 2020, Indiana has been an active compact state. A multistate Indiana license is valid at Indiana sites and also answers Loyola's Louisiana-or-multistate rule for enrolled graduate students. No APRN Compact law has passed in Indiana. For Loyola's timing, see the RN license page.
The catch is on the northwest border. Illinois is not in the compact, so a multistate Indiana license gives no privilege at a Chicago-side clinic. An Illinois RN license is required for hours there, and Illinois keeps a placement rule of its own for schools based elsewhere, set out in the Illinois guide. On the Louisville side, Kentucky is a compact state approved for all programs on Loyola's map.

Questions Loyola students ask
Can I do my Loyola New Orleans FNP clinicals in Indianapolis?
Yes. Loyola's July 2026 map shows Indiana approved for every School of Nursing program, and the June 2026 licensure table says it meets requirements. You select the preceptor and site, Loyola's placement office sets up the affiliation agreement, and every hour waits until the request shows Placement Approved in Exxat.
Does the Indiana Board of Nursing need to approve Loyola before I start?
No. The Indiana Board's accreditation work covers in-state programs for new RNs and LPNs, and it says graduate nursing programs sit outside its review. For an Indiana site, the approvals that matter are Loyola's: the affiliation agreement, the preceptor documents and the placement office's sign-off.
Could I commute from Gary or Hammond to a Chicago clinic?
Loyola's map approves Illinois for all programs, but Illinois is outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, so your multistate Indiana license stops at the state line. A Chicago clinic means holding an Illinois RN license, and Illinois regulates placements by schools from other states. Talk to the Clinical Practicum Coordinator before choosing a Chicago site.
When should an Indiana student begin the preceptor search?
Loyola asks you to start no less than three months ahead of the practicum term, because the Exxat process and a new affiliation agreement can take that long. A site that rewrites Loyola's agreement can take several months more, so keep a second Indiana option alive until your request reaches Placement Approved.
