Loyola New Orleans practicums in Illinois
Loyola University New Orleans lists Illinois as approved for all School of Nursing programs, so you can study online from Chicago, Peoria or Rockford and train in the state. Two Illinois facts need early attention. Illinois stays outside the Nurse Licensure Compact, which means Illinois hours call for an Illinois RN license, and the state regulates clinical placements by nursing schools based elsewhere.

Illinois residents can take Loyola's online FNP and DNP tracks, and the hybrid tracks add campus intensives in New Orleans. Before relocating into or out of Illinois mid-program, talk to your program advisor; the licensure disclosures explain how a move can affect your license and practicum.
Illinois's rule for schools from other states
Section 1300.340(n) of Title 68 of the Illinois Administrative Code tells a nursing school from outside Illinois that is seeking clinical placements in the state to file these with the Board:
- Proof of home-state board approval, or of accreditation
- A letter requesting placement, with the time frame, agencies and units named
- Forms on faculty qualifications and on preceptors
- The syllabus of the course
- The clinical facility's executed contract
An approval is good for two years and renewable, with a report due each year, and faculty need Illinois RN licenses. The rule's home in the RN program-approval section leaves its reach to graduate and APRN programs unstated. How it applies to Loyola is a question for the Clinical Practicum Coordinator, so raise an Illinois site with the placement office at the very start of your three-month lead time.
Who can precept you in Illinois
A neighboring provision, 1300.340(j), covers programs that rely on facility staff as preceptors. Each preceptor needs faculty approval and an orientation, must be present and reachable throughout the student's patient care, and must carry a current RN license valid where the student is practicing. Loyola's FNP guide also accepts MDs, DOs and, for FPCM I and II, PAs, so ask how that RN-license wording fits a physician before you submit one. Loyola's own conditions appear under preceptor requirements.
Under AANP's reduced practice rating, Illinois NPs in certain settings work under a physician collaborative agreement, and prescribing some Schedule II drugs or benzodiazepines comes with added practice and education requirements and a consultative relationship. Precepting also earns Illinois APRNs renewal credit: each APRN student supervised for a semester or quarter is worth 10 CE hours, up to 30 per renewal period, and the school supplies the documentation.
Chicago, the St. Louis side, Peoria and Rockford
Of the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro's 9.4 million people, about 8.7 million live on the Illinois side, by 2025 Census Bureau estimates. Roughly 672,000 more live on the Illinois side of greater St. Louis, and the metros of Peoria (near 364,000) and Rockford (near 337,000) follow.
Large Illinois systems include OSF HealthCare, Northwestern Medicine and UChicago Medicine, plus Endeavor Health and Advocate Health Care (Advocate Health's Illinois arm); each posts its own requirements for schools. Licensing: plan for an Illinois RN license
Illinois is a non-compact state, and nothing is pending in its legislature to change that. A multistate license issued by Indiana, Iowa or another member state therefore does nothing for you at an Illinois site. Loyola's rule is an active RN license wherever your practicum takes place, so Illinois hours mean an Illinois license.
Because Illinois licenses are single-state, yours will not by itself satisfy Loyola's separate rule that enrolled graduate students hold a Louisiana or multistate license. Settle with the School of Nursing which additional license you will carry and by when; the RN license page covers Loyola's timing. Illinois has not enacted the APRN Compact.

Yes. Loyola's approvals map lists Illinois as approved for all School of Nursing programs, and its licensure table shows Illinois meeting requirements. You choose your own preceptor and site, as every Loyola NP and DNP student does, and you will need an active Illinois RN license for the hours you complete there.
Will my Indiana compact license cover Illinois clinical hours?
It will not. Illinois sits outside the compact, so multistate licenses from member states such as Indiana, Iowa and Missouri carry no privilege there. Hours at an Illinois site require an Illinois RN license. The Indiana guide covers the other side of the Chicago metro.
Does Illinois require approval before a Loyola student starts clinicals?
Illinois's placement rule for out-of-state nursing schools asks for documents and grants an approval lasting two years. Where the rule sits in the code leaves its reach to graduate programs unclear, so the Clinical Practicum Coordinator is the person to ask. Any filing is the school's task, not yours.
Can I live in the Quad Cities or near St. Louis and train across the river?
Iowa and Missouri are both approved for all programs on Loyola's map, and both are in the compact, which lets a multistate license from either work at a site there.
