A Maine resident can study with Loyola University New Orleans in any of its nursing programs; Loyola approves Maine for all of them. The practical work is finding a qualified preceptor around Portland, Bangor or Lewiston-Auburn early enough for Loyola's paperwork, since Maine's board rules add little on top.

Maine's board and a school from Louisiana
Chapter 7 is the education rule of the Maine State Board of Nursing, and its subject is approving prelicensure schools located in Maine. Nothing in it addresses a school headquartered elsewhere sending students to Maine clinical sites, and the Board's education pages point to no separate process for that case.
The licensure exemption in Maine's Nurse Practice Act, 32 MRSA 2103(2), protects students whose board-approved program leads to a first nursing license, which describes prelicensure learners. As a graduate student you are already a registered nurse, and Loyola wants that license active in the practicum state. Loyola's handbook also warns that some states add compliance items, so ask each Maine site early what it needs beyond Loyola's list; the out-of-state practicum guide covers the usual extras.

Full practice, after a supervised start
AANP counts Maine among full practice states once an NP has put in two years of oversight: 24 months or more with a supervising physician or nurse practitioner, or on staff where a physician serves as medical director. Beyond that point the NP practices on their own authority.
For your search, that transition overlaps with Loyola's bar of more than one year in practice. An NP in month 14 of Maine's supervised period already clears Loyola's experience line, so do not rule out a clinician simply because they are still within those first two years.
Portland, Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn
Census estimates for 2025 give the Portland-South Portland metro roughly 578,000 people, with greater Bangor near 158,000 and the Lewiston-Auburn area near 116,000. DNP students can think beyond clinics. Loyola's DNP practicum letter names departments of health among possible project settings, and in Maine that role belongs to the state CDC, part of the Department of Health and Human Services. Can I do Loyola New Orleans NP clinicals in Maine?
Yes. Loyola's July 2026 State Approvals Map shows Maine approved for every School of Nursing program, and the June 2026 licensure table lists it as meeting requirements. You still select your own preceptor and site, and the site needs a Loyola affiliation agreement before hours begin.
Does the Maine Board have to approve Loyola's program for my clinicals?
Chapter 7, Maine's nursing education rule, deals with approving in-state prelicensure schools; graduate programs from elsewhere with students at Maine sites fall outside its text. If a Maine site asks for anything extra, route the question to Loyola's Clinical Practicum Coordinator, who handles agreements and site compliance.
Do I need a Louisiana license if I live in Maine?
Usually not, if your Maine license is multistate. Loyola asks enrolled graduate students for a Louisiana license or a multistate one, and Maine is a compact state. A single-state Maine license would leave the Loyola rule unmet. Loyola's license guide explains when each program checks.
Could I do part of my practicum in New Hampshire?
Possibly, but a New Hampshire site brings New Hampshire's rules with it, and Loyola expects your RN license to be active in that state too. Check the New Hampshire guide and Loyola's approvals for that state before you ask a preceptor across the line to commit.
