When a missing preceptor pushes back your Loyola University New Orleans graduation
At Loyola University New Orleans, a practicum that cannot start or finish on time can move your graduation by a term or more, because each practicum sits in a set place in your plan of study. How one late practicum moves the finish line
Loyola's posted plans of study give every practicum a fixed term. The MSN FNP plan runs NURS G823 in Fall II, NURS G827 in Spring II, NURS G829 in Fall III and NURS G833 in Spring III. When one slips, the courses after it can slip with it, and with no summer courses in the FNP certificate plan, there is no spare term to absorb the difference.
BSN-DNP students can feel it twice. The BSN-DNP FNP plan pairs NURS G942, a DNP Scholarly Project course, with the NURS G827 practicum in Spring III, so a missing clinical preceptor can stall half of a heavy term while the other half carries on. The PMHNP plans run a practicum in five straight terms, which leaves little slack. Your program director builds any revised plan, and only that plan gives you a new date.
Graduation needs a clean record
An unfinished practicum blocks graduation even when everything else is done. An open Incomplete keeps Loyola from certifying you for graduation, and the Incomplete has its own clock: outstanding work is due six weeks into the next term, or the grade turns to F. For Spring 2027, commencement is Saturday, May 15, and Spring 2027 Incompletes become F on June 28, 2027 (one Summer 2027 calendar, for the 5-week session, shows June 25 instead).
In Progress grades work differently. IP is meant for practicum-type courses longer than a term, normally closes within a year and converts to F after that unless a Request for Continued IP is filed. The five-year limit
Every Loyola graduate nursing program has to be completed within five years of starting coursework. A formal nursing leave of absence counts inside those five years, and the bulletin says a plan of study showing you cannot finish within the limit leads to academic dismissal. An academic dismissal can be appealed by emailing the associate dean and the School of Nursing director, with documentation, within 5 calendar days.
The limit bites when delays stack: a late placement, then a leave, then a repeated course. Count your remaining terms against your start date each time the plan changes, and keep your program director informed. A term lost to a preceptor search is a term the five-year clock keeps counting, which is why getting the next placement approved early matters as much as rescuing the current one.
Leave, withdrawal or staying enrolled
Each option reshapes your plan differently, so decide with your program director and Academic Advisor rather than alone. Online 8-week sessions have their own withdrawal dates, so check the calendar for your session.
Two limits apply to every route. A university withdrawal is no way around an academic dismissal already pending, and coming back after a year away, or with a graduate GPA under 3.0, requires readmission.

Changing programs or states
A BSN-DNP FNP student can ask to move to the MSN FNP, whose posted plan runs eight terms against the BSN-DNP's four-year plan. The handbook sets out a Change of Program Request Form for this, and passing at least one practicum course is one of its conditions. It changes the credential you earn, so talk it through with your program director before a delayed placement makes the decision for you.
Moving to another state can also reshape the timeline. Loyola warns that a mid-program move can change which licensure rules apply, your access to practicums and your financial aid, and it wants students to speak with their program advisor before relocating. The surest way to keep a graduation date is to have the next preceptor approved before the current term ends. Questions Loyola students ask
Can I graduate with an Incomplete on my Loyola record?
No. Loyola's grading rules say a student with an Incomplete is not certified for graduation. The outstanding work, practicum hours included, has to be finished and graded first. It is due six weeks into the next term, or the Incomplete becomes an F.
Does a leave of absence stop Loyola's five-year clock?
No. The bulletin says a formal nursing leave of absence lets you return within one year, but the year away still counts inside the five-year window for completing the program. You re-enter under the curriculum in force at the time, with a new plan of study.
Will delaying a practicum change my financial aid?
It can. Loyola notes that a W does not affect GPA but may affect financial aid, and that moving to another state mid-program may affect aid too. Speak with Student Financial Services before you withdraw or take leave, so the timing does not create a second problem.
Who do I talk to first if my graduation is at risk?
Begin with your practicum course's faculty of record, who approves any change of dates, then your program director about the plan as a whole. The Clinical Practicum Coordinator handles the placement side in Exxat, and your Academic Advisor can explain what a change does to registration.
What if my final practicum is in Spring 2027?
Spring 2027 classes end May 7 and commencement is May 15, so hours for NURS G833 or any last practicum need to be logged before the term closes. If a preceptor gap appears, raise it by midterm; an Incomplete in the final term holds up graduation certification until the work is done.
