Alabama's Board of Nursing wants paperwork from any nursing program headquartered outside the state a minimum of 15 days before you set foot in an Alabama clinic, and your license number is part of it.

The Alabama Board of Nursing hears from the program first

The governing rule sits in Alabama's administrative code (rule 610-X-3-.09), and it covers advanced practice programs from other states as well as pre-licensure ones. Loyola, as the sending program, submits a letter of intent and proof of its approvals, with that 15-day minimum before any Alabama clinical work, and pays the Board's annual charge for programs from elsewhere. According to the Board's FAQ, no student from such a program may start clinicals in Alabama until the approval and the fee are both in place.

What goes in the letter is concrete: every student's name and license number, the name and license number of whoever supervises clinically, the facility itself, and a sign-off from that facility's top nursing leader. None of it can be supplied until the preceptor and site are locked in, which turns Loyola's three-month lead time into a real deadline in Alabama.

In Alabama, a preceptor's yes is only step one: the Board filing that names your preceptor and facility has to clear before you attend a single clinical day.

Where Loyola stands on Alabama

Loyola's sources agree here: both June 2, 2026 licensure tables list Alabama as meeting requirements with no note, and the School of Nursing State Approvals Map of July 15, 2026 shows it approved for all programs, as the August 2025 map did. Approval sets the stage, and Loyola's usual steps follow. NP and DNP students select their own preceptor and site, and the placement office handles the affiliation agreement once you bring the site forward. Nurse-Midwifery and Nurse Anesthesia students train at program-assigned sites, and BSN and ABSN clinicals stay in Greater New Orleans.

Collaborative practice and where Alabama students look

On AANP's three-tier scale, Alabama sits in the middle tier, reduced practice. Every Alabama NP needs a physician collaborator, on terms the state regulates, for at least part of their practice, with oversight split between the Board of Nursing and the Board of Medical Examiners. None of that changes Loyola's own test for whoever precepts you: a board-certified clinician with an unencumbered Alabama license who has practiced for more than a year, as the preceptor requirements page sets out.

Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile and Montgomery are Alabama's four biggest metro areas. Among the large systems are UAB Medicine, Huntsville Hospital Health System, Infirmary Health, USA Health and Baptist Health; Infirmary and USA Health are Mobile-based, and Baptist Health serves Montgomery. Every one publishes its own student requirements, so check them directly before planning around any of them.

Alabama has a preceptor tax credit on the books, known as APTIP, aimed at unpaid preceptors working in rural areas the state counts as medically underserved. Only students of schools with a physical home in Alabama make a rotation eligible, so hosting you through Loyola earns nothing under it.

Licensing: an Alabama or multistate RN license

For clinical work in Alabama, the ABN expects MSN and DNP students, like everyone in a post-licensure program, to carry either a clean, current Alabama RN license or a compact-state multistate license. Alabama has been a compact state since January 1, 2020. An Alabama-issued multistate license therefore satisfies Loyola twice: it is active where you train, and it is multistate for the length of your enrollment.

A single-state Alabama license covers the Alabama site but leaves Loyola's enrollment rule open, which a Louisiana license would then fill. Alabama has not enacted the APRN Compact. The RN license page covers timing and Nursys e-Notify.

Yes. Alabama meets requirements on Loyola's June 2026 licensure table and is approved for all programs on the July 2026 map. Before your first clinical day, three things must be in place: the program's filing with the Alabama Board of Nursing, an Alabama or multistate RN license, and Placement Approved status in Exxat after the affiliation agreement is signed.

Who files with the Alabama Board of Nursing, me or Loyola?

Alabama's rule puts the letter of intent, approval documents and annual fee on the program based outside the state. Your part is getting accurate details in early: your license number, your preceptor's name and license number, and the facility. Can an Alabama clinician claim the state preceptor credit for teaching me?

Alabama's credit follows the student's school, and only schools physically located in Alabama count. Loyola University New Orleans is a Louisiana school, so a preceptor hosting you would not qualify. Precepting is still a way for Alabama clinicians to shape the next group of NPs, and a student with complete, organized paperwork makes that yes easier to give.

Is Alabama part of the APRN Compact?

Not yet. Alabama is in the RN compact, yet it has not enacted the APRN Compact, which only operates once seven states enact it. For practicum purposes, your RN license is the one that counts. After graduation, the state where you practice sets your APRN licensure path.
