NDBON recognition covers NP programs too
NDBON runs a recognition process for distance programs, and the students it covers are those bound for LPN, RN or APRN licensure. With APRN on that list, NP programs sit squarely in scope.
What recognition involves
- Timing: the program's request lands 60 days before planned student activity.
- Cost: a yearly fee, paid by the program.
- Authorization: NC-SARA approval, or authorization or an exemption from North Dakota's State Board of Higher Education. Loyola is an NC-SARA participant.
- Every semester, before activity starts: a roster of students with their license details, plus facilities, courses, preceptors and faculty, their resumes and licenses, the affiliation agreements, and each facility's verification of clinical space.
Century Code section 43-12.1-04(12) then exempts students of a board-recognized out-of-state program from licensure, once the Board is notified in writing and provided clinical sites are available.
What the filing means for your timeline
- Ask where Loyola standsThe recognition request is the school's to make. The Clinical Practicum Coordinator can tell you whether Loyola holds it for your term.
- Settle the preceptor earlyThe semester report names your preceptor and attaches a resume and license, so a late swap touches the Board filing as well as Exxat.
- Start the agreement on Loyola's clockAgreements travel with the report, and Loyola already asks you to begin three months ahead.
- Confirm the site has spaceEach facility vouches for its clinical capacity, so bring its contact person in at the start.
Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks, Minot
AANP rates North Dakota full practice. Sanford Health operates a Fargo medical center and a Bismarck one, Altru Health System is the Grand Forks name, Trinity Health serves Minot, CHI St. Alexius Health belongs to CommonSpirit Health in Bismarck, and Essentia Health operates across three states with a Fargo presence.
Fargo's metro counted around 202,000 residents on the North Dakota bank in 2025, Bismarck about 140,000, and Grand Forks and Minot each near 75,000. Fargo and Grand Forks both reach into Minnesota, which Loyola approves, if your license is active there. The west is another matter: Montana is red on Loyola's map, so a search near that border stays in North Dakota.
Compact state for RNs, early adopter for APRNs
Nurses in North Dakota have practiced under the NLC since January 2018, which means a multistate license reaches a site here and also satisfies Loyola's rule of a Louisiana or multistate license during enrollment. In March 2021 North Dakota enacted the APRN Compact, one of just five states to do so, but the compact stays inactive until seven states sign on. Is there a North Dakota sign-off Loyola needs before my NP clinicals?
Yes: NDBON recognition. The Board's distance program process covers programs leading to APRN licensure, asks for the request 60 days before student activity, and requires a semester report listing students, preceptors, facilities and agreements. Loyola, not the student, files it, so ask the Clinical Practicum Coordinator about Loyola's status early.
Does North Dakota's APRN Compact let me practice elsewhere after graduation?
Not for now. North Dakota's 2021 enactment made it one of five member states, and the compact needs seven to switch on. Each state therefore still licenses its own NPs, and Loyola reminds graduates that the rules of the state where they end up practicing take over once the program is done.
Could a Minnesota clinic across from Fargo host my Loyola practicum?
Loyola's map approves Minnesota, so the state is open to you. The site then has to meet Minnesota's rules instead of North Dakota's, your RN license must be active in Minnesota, and the preceptor's license has to be current there. Tell us which side of the river suits your schedule and we will search accordingly.
What do I need to hand over for North Dakota's semester report?
Expect Loyola to need your license details in North Dakota or compact form, plus your preceptor's resume and license, the facility name, the course and the affiliation agreement. The facility separately confirms it has clinical space. Having those ready early keeps the report, and your start date, on schedule.
